SAN JOSE, Calif.— Freshman Camila Celis overcame her opponent in three sets to secure the win for the San José State women's tennis team (7-5, 0-2 MW) in a 4-1 win against Rhode Island (7-6, 0-0 A10) on Wednesday afternoon from the Spartan Tennis Complex.
Under the intense heat, the Spartans kicked off the match, falling short in two doubles matches, giving the Rams the doubles point. As singles matches commenced, the Spartans found a second wind and led in all first sets of their respective matches. Three matches were won in straight sets, giving the Spartans the lead they needed and allowing for Celis to clinch the match.
- Tara Mihaljevic only allowed her opponent to score two points throughout two sets, winning, 6-1, 6-1, from court four.
- This marks Mihaljevic's fifth win of the year.
- Emma Fantousis quickly won on court three, 6-2, 6-0, giving the Spartans the lead.
- On court one, Duru Durgun defeated her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
