Spartans Fall in Late Rally Against Air Force

SAN JOSE, Calif.— Emma Fantousis won in both singles and doubles to lead the San José State women's tennis team (7-6, 0-3 MW) in a close 4-2 loss against Air Force (5-10, 2-1 MW) on Friday afternoon from the Spartan Tennis Complex. 

Starting off the match, the Spartans dropped the doubles point, winning only one out of the three doubles matches. In singles, the Spartans quickly tied the match to 1-1, but then fell short with losses on courts five and four.

Duru Durgun bounced back in her singles match, cutting the deficit from 4-1, to 4-2, but after long, hard-fought rallies on courts two and six, the Spartans fell short. 

  • Fantousis won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, from court three. 
  • Durgun defeated her opponent, 7-5, 6-4 on court one. 
  • Soledad Fayos Capilla and Fantousis won 6-1 in doubles. 
  • Camila Celis fell short, 6-4, 6-2. 
  • Tara Mihaljevic dropped her match, 6-3, 7-5. 
  • Fayos Capilla battled hard in a tight three-set match but was bested by her opponent, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6. 
  • Durgun and Mihaljevic fell short, 6-4. 
  • Celis and Katarina Brajovic lost 6-4. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans will conclude their string of matches with a matchup against New Mexico on Sunday, March 22, at noon.
