PHOENIX - Leata Sherlin went 2-for-3 with the first homerun of her career to lead the San José State softball team (10-17, 2-2 MW) in the 5-1 loss to No. 22 Grand Canyon (31-1, 4-0 MW) on Friday night from GCU Softball Stadium.
Sherlin was down 1-2 in the count until the very next pitch. With the pitch being low and away, she muscled it to the opposite side of the field and sent it over the right field fence.
This run would be the lone run the Spartans could bring across.
The Spartans held the Lopes scoreless in the first inning before the Lopes opened the scoring by bringing in three runs in the second inning.
The Lopes then only managed to score two more, one in the third and fifth.
Delaney Faus pitched 4.1 innings in the matchup and struck out three batters. To come in relief was Jordyn Fray, who closed out the final 1.2 innings, giving up only one hit and one walk while striking out one.
- Gigi Ortega went perfect at the plate going 2-for-2 with a walk, the first multihit game of her career
- Ahmiya Noriega is on a seven-game on-base streak after getting walked
- Reina Zermeno and Carly Cummings each tallied one hit
- Zermeno is currently on a five-game hitting streak
