BERKELEY, Calif.– San José State track and field showcased its depth at the Cal Opener, fueled by gold-medal performances from both the men’s and women’s relay squads. The Spartans dominated the track, with the women’s 4x100 and men’s 4x400 teams outclassing the field to secure top honors.
Nakai Johnson, Leila Champion, Sharli’e McCuller, and Zoe Ewell placed first in the women's 4x100 relay with a time of 44.77. In the men's 4x400 relay, Spencer Gray, Nathaniel Guillory, Marcel Bovell, and Dontae Smith placed first with a time of 3:13.67
- Julius Baker placed first in his heat and overall in the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 14.42
- Baker was followed by his teammate Hayden Bowne, who placed second overall in the men’s 110 hurdles and second in his heat with a time of 14.77
- Ewell placed first in her heat for the women's 400m dash and second overall with a time of 54.66
- In the women's 100 hurdles, Riley Costales placed first with a time of 14.38
- Costales placed first in her heat and fourth overall in the women's 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.12, followed by her teammate Savana Dutton, who placed fourth in her heat and fifth overall with a time of 1:03.90
- Tyson Bonilla, Lexington Leffall, Gray, and Smith placed second in the men's 4x100 relay with a time of 41.33
- Sharli’e McCuller placed second in her heat and second overall in the women’s 100m dash with a time of 11.79
- McCuller also placed second in her heat and second overall in the women's 200 dash with a time of 24.42
- Guillory placed second in his heat in the men's 100m dash and took second place overall with a time of 10.60
- Kaitlin Donnelly, Aaliyah Hasni, Dutton, and Johnson came in third in the women's 4x400 relay with a time of 4:01.56
- Marcel Bovell placed fourth in his heat and fourth overall in the men's 400 hurdles with a time of 54.27
