PHOENIX - Ahmiya Noriega hits her first homerun of the season to lead the San José State softball team (10-18, 2-3 MW) in the 10-2 loss to No. 22 Grand Canyon (32-1, 5-0 MW) on Saturday night from GCU Softball Stadium.
In the top of the third inning, Noriega worked up to a 2-2 count and on the fifth pitch of the at-bat, she showed off her power and went opposite field to clear the left field fence.
In the very next inning in the top half of the fourth, Isabella Sandoval, on a 1-1 count, ripped a double in the left-center gap to score McDowell from second. These two runs would be the only runs that the Spartans were able to bring across.
GCU put up four runs in both the first and third innings and then two more in the fifth to seal the game, 10-2.
- Noriega's homerun is the sixth of her career; the last time she cleared the fence was on May 3 of last season against San Diego State
- Noriega is also currently on a nine-game on-base streak
- Sandoval's double is the first extra-base hit of her career, extending an on-base streak to six
- Carly Cummings, Reina Zermeno, Leata Sherlin and Sophia Burdick each also tallied a hit in the game
- Cummings is currently on a five-game hit streak and has now reached base in nine games in a row
UP NEXT: The Spartans will play in the third and final game of the series against No. 22 Grand Canyon on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. from GCU Softball Stadium.
