SAN JOSE, Calif.— Soledad Fayos Capilla won in straight sets to lead the San José State women's tennis team (7-7, 0-4 MW) in a tight 4-3 loss against New Mexico (11-6, 2-2 MW) on Sunday afternoon from the Spartan Tennis Complex.
The Spartans dropped the doubles point early in the match after valiant efforts from courts two and three. As singles matches commenced, the Lobos got an early victory from court four, taking the lead, 2-0. But the Spartans responded with straight set wins from courts one and two, tying the score, 2-2. Emma Fantousis then secured a nail-biting three-set tiebreaking match to get the Spartans to lead 3-2. The Lobos then took wins from courts five and six, clinching the match.
- Duru Durgun defeated her opponent in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
- Fayos Capilla fought her way to the finish, coming back from being down 5-3 in her first set to winning, 7-5, 7-5.
- Fantousis had an epic comeback, winning her singles match, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).
- Tara Mihaljevic fell short, 6-2, 6-1.
- Camila Celis battled till the end but fell short, 6-3, 5-7, 6-7 (7-9).
- Cristina Mateos Losada dropped her match 3-6, 6-3, 4-6.
