Spartans Drop First Game of Series Against Nevada

RENO, Nev. - Reina Zermeno powers her sixth homerun of the season to lead the San José State softball team (10-20, 2-5 MW) in the 10-4 loss to Nevada (23-11, 5-1 MW) on Friday night from Christina M. Hixson Softball Park.

Zermeno batting in the third spot had both Leata Sherlin and Carly Cummings on base after back-to-back hits. On a 1-1 count, Zermeno roped a homerun to straight-away centerfield to take the early lead 3-0 in the top of the first.

The Wolfpack responded with a homerun of their own in the bottom half of the innings to put two on the board and shrink the margin to one run. They then went on and scored five runs in the bottom of the second, making the score 7-3.

In the top of the third, Sarah Deplitch hit a fly ball into left center that brought home Cummings from third. This would be the last run the Spartans could bring in.

Nevada went on to add more security runs by putting up two more in the fifth and one more in the sixth to secure the game 10-4.

  • Zermeno's three-run homerun brings her RBIs to 20 on the season
  • The homerun is also good for her 104th career homerun
  • Zermeno now has a four-game hit streak
  • Both Sherlin and Cummings went 3-for-4 on the day
  • Sherlin now has six multi-hit games and Cummings has five on the season
  • Ahmiya Noriega drew two walks on the day

UP NEXT: The Spartans will continue the series against Nevada at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at Christina M. Hixon Softball Park. The game can be watched on Mountain West Network.
