SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Alex Fernandes went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk to lead the San José State baseball team (12-16, 3-3 MW) in a 5-3 loss to Santa Clara (13-14, 3-3 WCC) Monday night from Stephen Schott Stadium.
Santa Clara struck early and never fully relinquished control, plating two runs in the first inning with the help of hit-by-pitches and walks.
The Spartans answered in the second inning. After a leadoff single and a walk put traffic on the bases, catcher Dennis Gamester delivered with an RBI double to get SJSU on the board and cut the deficit to 2–1.
The Broncos added a run in the fourth on an RBI single, then tacked on two more in the fifth, both coming home on wild pitches, to extend the lead to 5–1.
San José State mounted its best push in the seventh inning. The Spartans rallied with two runs, highlighted by a clutch two-run double from Fernandes that brought SJSU within 5–3, as close as they would get.
