SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San José State baseball team (4-11, 0-0 MW) will host Bay Area rival, Cal (13-3, 0-0 ACC) on Tuesday, March 10 and will then start Mountain West play this weekend by hosting New Mexico (12-5, 0-0 MW) with a three-game series.
First pitch against Cal will be at 6:05 p.m. and first pitches for New Mexico will be Friday at 6:05 p.m., Saturday at 2:05 p.m. and Sunday at 12:05 p.m. All four games can be watched on the Mountain West Network.
- This is the first meeting against Cal this season; the Spartans will later travel to Berkeley, Calif., on April 15
- The Spartans defeated Cal 14-5 last season in their lone meeting at Excite Ballpark
- The Lobos took the series against the Spartans 2-1 last season at Lobo baseball field. However, the Spartans' got revenge in the Mountain West Tournament, defeating the Lobos 6-3 in the opening round
- Alex Fernandes is currently amongst the leaders in the MW in multiple categories, but has risen to become the leader in batting average with a .464 avg. He is also second in hits thus far into the season with 26
- Fernandes has reached base in every game so far this season in which has helped his On-Base Percentage to be .549, second in the MW
- Fernandes also ranks second with doubles (6), tied for fifth in stolen bases (4), fifth for slugging percentage (.661), tied for eighth in walks (11) and eighth in runs scored (16)
- Three Spartans, Tyler Albanese, Fernandes and Kyle Calzadiaz, were named to the preseason All-Mountain West Team
