SAN JOSE, Calif. - Following an 18-hour weather delay, Gigi Ortega calls the game on a walk-off bunt to lead the San José State softball team (12-27, 4-12 MW) to an 8-0 run rule in five innings win over San Diego State (21-20, 6-10 MW) in the final meeting as MW opponents.
The Spartans opened the game early in the bottom of the first inning off a Zermeno home run that also brought in Ahmiya Noriega to take an early lead of 2-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Spartans would add another run from a Sophia Burdick single to score Ortega from second.
Carly Cummings, in a full count, singled to right that scored Burdick in the bottom of the fifth inning, elevating the Spartans to a 4-0 lead.
The game was then resumed on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
To lead off the game following the delay, Noriega drew a walk after battling into a full count.
Reina Zermeno, in a 1-1 count, ripped a ball into the left-center field for a ground rule double that scored Cummings from second. Passing the baton to Leata Sherlin down in a 0-1 count tripled down the right field line to score both Noriega and Zermeno, making the score, 7-0.
In a hitters count of 2-0, Ortega laid down a bunt to first base and brought in Sherlin from third to walk off in run-rule fashion, winning 8-0.
Jordyn Fray earned the start in the matchup, pitching the entire five innings for the Spartans, only allowing two hits and no runs.
- Both Burdick and Zermeno went 2-for-3, with Burdick having one RBI and Zermeno having three
- Sherlin's triple is the third of the season
- Five Spartans each had a hit: Cummings, Noriega, Sherlin, Ortega and Shay McDowell
UP NEXT: The Spartans will next travel to Logan, Utah, to face Utah State in a three-game series from Friday, April 17, to Sunday, April 19. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and can be watched on Mountain West Network.
