FRESNO, Calif.— Cristina Mateos Losada won in doubles and singles to lead the San José State women's tennis team (8-13, 1-10 MW) in a 4-1 win against Fresno State (8-15, 1-10 MW) from the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center on Thursday evening.
From the beginning, the Spartans found their spark and won the doubles point after a long drought. Emma Fantousis and doubles partner Soledad Fayos Capilla, Katarina Brajovic and partner Cristina Mateos Losada each took the lead and defeated their opponents, 6-2.
Starting singles, the Spartans set the pace as they took the first set in four out of six of the singles matches. On court five, Camila Celis defeated her opponent in straight sets, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs caught up with a win on court four, but in response, singles wins from courts two and six clinched the win for the Spartans.
- Celis quickly won, without letting her opponent score in the second set, 6-4, 6-0.
- Fantousis won after a tight tiebreaking first set 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.
- Mateos Losada came back in a three-set match, overcoming her opponent, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
- Fantousis and Fayos Capilla won on court one, 6-2.
- Brajovic and Mateos Losada won from court three, 6-2.
- Tara Mihaljevic fell short on court four, 6-1, 6-3.
UP NEXT: The Spartans will enter the Mountain West Tournament as the 11th seed and will face the fifth seed on Wednesday, April 22, at 9:00 a.m. from the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
