LOGAN, Utah - Reina Zermeno went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and a triple to lead the San José State softball team (13-28, 5-13 MW) in a 10-5 win over Utah State (18-27, 6-12 MW) on Saturday afternoon from LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field.
Utah State struck first off a double to take the lead in the bottom of the first, 1-0.
The Spartans responded with a six-run third inning. With the bases juiced, Carly Cummings singled to left field to score Haley Reeve from third. Zermeno then ripped a single down the left-field line that brought in Sophia Burdick and Cummings to make the score 3-1.
Passing the baton to Leata Sherlin, who crushed a double into the left-center gap to clear the bases and score Ahmiya Noriega and Zermeno. Next up, McDowell, in a 1-0 count, lined a single up the middle to bring in Sherlin to elevate the Spartans to a 6-1 lead.
The Aggies responded in the bottom half of the frame by putting up three runs of their own to change the score to 6-4.
The Spartans then put up more security runs in the top of the fifth inning by adding two more runs. McDowell slashed a double into right and brought in Zermeno from second.
McDowell then scored on a throwing error to bring the Spartans up to 8-4.
In the top of the sixth inning, Zermeno ripped a triple into the right-center gap and brought in Cummings and Noriega to make the score 10-4.
The Aggies only managed to claw one run back in the seventh inning.
Norah Coulsell earned the start on the mound, going 3.0 innings. Delaney Faus then entered in the fourth inning, holding the Aggies scoreless through 3.1 innings before the run in the seventh.
- The Spartans' 15 hits is the second most this season, the most being 16 against Manhattan on Feb. 21
- The last time the Spartans defeated the Aggies was on May 4 2024, on the road
- Zermeno's triple is her fifth of the year
- Zermeno's four RBIs ties her season high, doing it earlier against Pacific on Feb. 22
- Sherlin and McDowell's doubles are each their fifth of the year
- This is Sherlin's sixth game where she has had three hits
- Reeve, Burdick and McDowell each had two hits
- Cummings, Noriega and Gigi Ortega each collected one hit
