LOGAN, Utah - Reina Zermeno hits a grand slam to put the San José State softball team (13-29, 5-14 MW) on top in the sixth inning before falling 7-6 in the series finale against Utah State (19-27, 7-12 MW) Sunday morning at the LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field.
The Aggies put runs on the board first by putting up two runs in the bottom of the second inning.
In the top of the third inning, Carly Cummings first hit a single to center field to get on. Followed by back-to-back walks from Zermeno and Leata Sherlin.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Shay McDowell down in a 1-2 count, hit a single up the middle that scored both Zermeno and Sherlin to tie the game 2-2.
Utah State responded with a run in the bottom half to take back the lead 3-2.
The fourth and fifth innings were scoreless on either side of the plate.
Up until the top of the sixth inning, Samantha Kulak, Gigi Ortega and Cummings all walked to reach base. A bases-loaded, two-out, 10-pitch battle was capped off by a Zermeno grand slam to right field to put the Spartans back on top, 6-3.
The Aggies responded with a grand slam of their own in the same inning to secure the game 7-6.
- This is Zermeno's second game in a row, third of the season and fifth of her career, collecting four RBIs in a single game
- Zermeno's homerun was the 25th of her career
- McDowell collected two RBIs in each game against Utah State
- Sophia Burdick and McDowell each collected two hits
- Ahmiya Noriega, Haley Reeve, Ortega, Sherlin and Cummings each recorded one hit
