Deplitch Leads Spartans in Extra Innings Loss to Fresno State

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sarah Deplitch led the San José State softball team (11-22, 3-7 MW) with a two-run double in the 4-3 extra-inning loss to Fresno State (15-15, 4-6 MW) on Thursday night. 

The Bulldogs jumped on top early in the game, scoring two runs back-to-back in the top of the first inning. 

The Spartans responded in the bottom of the second inning, which started off with a nine-pitch at-bat walk for Shay McDowell. Haley Reeve followed it up with a single to advance McDowell, making it two runners on. 

Deplitch in a full count, then doubled to left to score McDowell and Reeve to tie the game 2-2. 

In the next Spartan half of the inning, Reina Zermeno ripped a triple to left field that was followed up by an Ahmiya Noriega sac-fly to put the Spartans on top, 3-2. 

Fresno State would respond in the top of the seventh off a sac-fly, tying the game 3-3 to send it into extras. 

The Bulldogs would then manage to score one run in the ninth from a single and the Spartans were unable to respond. 

In the circle, Delaney Faus got the nod to start and after the two Fresno runs in the first, she held them scoreless through the next five innings. 

  • Eight different Spartans collected a hit tonight, McDowell collected two; Leata Sherlin, Carly Cummings, Sophia Burdick, Reeve, Noriega, Zermeno and Deplitch
  • Deplitch's two-run double is her fourth of the year
  • Faus pitched 6.0 innings, only allowing two runs and striking out three
  • Zermeno's triple is her third of the year
  • Noriega and Burdick each stole a base and made it their seventh and third of the year, respectively 
  • Reeve now has a hitting streak through four games and Noriega has one of three
  • McDowell has an on-base streak of five
  • Reeve, Noriega and Cummings each have an on-base streak of four
  • The Spartans recorded no errors in the game
