MONTGOMERY, Texas – San José State senior Avinash Iyer delivered a masterclass performance on Monday, carding a blistering 8-under-par 64 to win the 12th annual Collegiate Showcase. With the victory, Iyer has earned a prestigious exemption into the PGA TOUR’s Corales Puntacana Championship, held this summer in the Dominican Republic.
The event, which is traditionally held at Riviera Country Club in Southern California as part of The Genesis Invitational, was moved to the Bluejack National in Montgomery, Texas, due to a rainout during the initial showcase at Riviera Country Club in February.
Iyer’s round of 64 was nothing short of spectacular, featuring seven birdies and an eagle that allowed him to finish three strokes clear of the field. His dominant performance continues a strong tradition for the Spartans at this event, following in the footsteps of former SJSU standout Sean Yu, who won the showcase in 2020.
Fellow SJSU teammate Ivan Barahona also turned in a stellar performance, finishing in a tie for fourth place after carding a 3-under-par 69 with three birdies and no bogeys. Barahona’s steady play helped solidify a historic day for the San José State golf program.
By securing the individual title, Iyer earns an exemption into the PGA TOUR's Corales Puntacana Championship at the Puntacana Resort & Club.
UP NEXT: The Spartans host the 79th Western Intercollegiate Presented by Titleist from April 13-15th at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif., and it will be seen on the Golf Channel.
