LAS VEGAS - Emma Fantousis led the No. 11 seed San José State women’s tennis team, which saw its 2026 campaign come to a close on Wednesday morning, falling 4-2 to No. 6 seed Utah State in the opening round of the Mountain West Tournament at the Darling Tennis Center.
Despite a resilient effort in singles play highlighted by dominant straight-set victories from Fantousis and Tara Mihaljevic, the Spartans (8-14, 1-10 MW) were unable to overcome an early deficit against the Aggies (12-10, 5-6 MW).
Doubles Play
- Utah State gained the early momentum by capturing the doubles point.
- In flight two, Camila Celis and Duru Durgun fought hard but ultimately fell 3-6.
- The Aggies clinched the point in flight three, where Cristina Mateos Losada and Katarina Brajovic also dropped a 3-6 decision.
Singles Action
- Trailing 1-0 entering singles, Fantousis provided a massive spark for the Spartans in the fourth flight, overwhelming her opponent in a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
- Mihaljevic followed suit with a nearly flawless performance, surrendering only one game in a 6-0, 6-1 rout to keep SJSU within striking distance.
- Utah State proved too strong at the bottom of the lineup. Mateos Losada fell 1-6, 3-6 in the sixth flight.
- Despite a gritty second-set comeback by Celis in the fifth flight, she eventually fell 3-6, 7-5, 3-6.
- The match was decided in the third flight, where Soledad Fayos Capilla took the opening set 7-5 before Utah State’s Maria Paula Ramos Garcia rallied to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-1, clinching the dual match for the Aggies.
- Durgun’s match remained unfinished.
