SAN JOSE, Calif. - Ahmiya Noriega went 2-for-3 at the plate, which included an RBI single to lead the San José State softball team (11-23, 3-8 MW) in the 14-6 loss in six innings to Fresno State (16-15, 5-6 MW) on Friday night.
The Bulldogs struck early, putting up seven runs in the first inning. They then put up three more runs in the top of the fourth inning, making it a 10-0 deficit.
The Spartans did not respond until the bottom of the fourth inning, which started with a Noriega double down the third base line. Shay McDowell, next at the plate, took the first pitch she saw to left center for a double to bring in Noriega.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Sarah Deplitch led off the inning with a four-pitch walk and Carly Cummings later reached base on a fielder's choice. Reina Zermeno in a hitters count of 2-0, ripped a triple to right-center that scored both Deplitch and Cummings.
Passing the baton to Noriega, who singles to second base to score Zermeno from third. Next in the lineup was Haley Reeve, who also singled, this time to right field and scored Noriega from second, making the score 10-5.
Fresno State responded with four more runs in the top of the sixth. In the bottom half of the inning, the Spartans only responded with one run from a Leata Sherlin double that scored Deplitch from first.
- Zermeno's triple is her fourth of the season, tying her season-high
- Five different Spartans collected RBIs: Sherlin, Zermeno, Noriega, McDowell and Reeve, each of them also collected a hit, Noriega collecting two
- Sherlin now has a hitting streak of three games
- Reeve has extended her hitting and on-base streaks to five
- Noriega extends her hitting streak to four and her on-base streak to five
- McDowell has extended to her on-base streak to six
