Fayos Capilla Wins in Singles and Doubles Against Utah State

SAN JOSE, Calif.— Soledad Fayos Capilla came back in the first set of her singles match and won her doubles match to lead the San José State women's tennis team (7-11, 0-8 MW) in a tight 4-3 loss against Utah State (10-8, 4-4 MW) on Saturday afternoon from the Spartan Tennis Complex. 

Starting in doubles, the Spartans kept a close trail on the Aggies, with a win from court one to even out the score. However, the Spartans fell short on court three after a hard-fought tiebreaking set. 

In singles, the Spartans took off, winning in the first set of five singles matches. Emma Fantousis gave the Spartans their first push with a three-set singles match win, and Tara Mihaljevic defeated her opponent in straight sets on court four. Fayos Capilla bounced back from being down 4-1 to winning her first set, 7-5, and eventually defeating her opponent in straight sets to put the Spartans in the lead, 3-2. The Aggies then went on to take wins from courts one and six, clinching the match. 

  • Fayos Capilla and Fantousis won in their doubles match 6-4.
  • Fantousis won her singles match, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, marking her ninth win in dual singles play. 
  • Mihaljevic recorded her sixth win in dual singles play, 6-4, 6-4. 
  • Fayos Capilla won, 7-5, 6-2, from court three. 
  • Katarina Brajovic and doubles partner Camila Celis fell short in a close tiebreaking match, 7-6 (7-4). 
  • Duru Durgun and Cristina Mateos Losada fell short, 6-2. 
  • Celis fell short in her singles match, 6-0, 6-1. 
  • Durgun was bested by her opponent after fighting vigilantly, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 3-6. 
  • Mateos Losada dropped her singles match, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 4-6.
