SAN JOSE, Calif. — Beginning with the 2027-28 season, San José State will compete in The Big West for Beach Volleyball, Men’s Water Polo, and Women’s Water Polo, announced by the conference on Monday.
"We are absolutely thrilled to align our beach volleyball and water polo programs under The Big West umbrella," said Director of Athletics Jeff Konya. "The Big West has earned a tremendous national reputation for competitive excellence, particularly in these specific Olympic sports. Bringing all three of these programs into a single, highly reputable conference not only streamlines our athletic operations but also provides our student-athletes with an elite, sustainable platform to compete for championships. This is a great day for Spartan Athletics."
By joining The Big West, SJSU becomes part of an expanded 2027-28 conference, further consolidating the West Coast's top-tier talent in water polo and beach volleyball.
“The Big West is proud to expand meaningful championship pathways for student-athletes while strengthening several sports in which our conference has established a strong national presence,” said The Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly. “These institutions bring outstanding programs, competitive excellence, and a shared commitment to the student-athlete experience. These additions enhance the depth and visibility of The Big West, support long-term sport sustainability, and position the conference for continued success on the national stage.”
