SAN JOSE, Calif. - Three former Spartans, Tyler Albanese, Alex Fernandes and Kyle Calzadiaz have signed as undrafted free agents in the MLB. Albanese signed with the Cleveland Guardians, Fernandes signed with the Athletics and Calzadiaz signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Tyler Albanese, RHP, Redlands, Calif., Redlands East Valley High School
- Spent three seasons with the Spartans, making 49 appearances and four starts on the mound
- Finished with 10 career saves, tied for the fourth most in SJSU history
- Had seven wins and 96 strikeouts across 84.2 innings pitched in his career
- In 2025, was named Second Team All-Mountain West and to the Mountain West All-Tournament Team after finishing the year with an ERA of 2.97 and nine saves
Alex Fernandes, Outfielder, San Marcos, Calif., Memphis
- Spent his final two collegiate seasons with the Spartans
- Began his career at UCLA before transferring to Edmonds College and then to Memphis
- Named First Team All-Mountain West in 2026 and to the Mountain West All-Tournament Team in 2025
- Had the 12th best batting average (.401) in the nation and his on base percentage (.528) was eighth best nationally in 2026
- Became the fourth Spartan ever to hit .400 in a season and the first since 1993
- His 12 triples in his career at SJSU is tied for the fourth most in school history
- Appeared in 110 games for the Spartans across two seasons, starting in all but one
- Tallied 155 hits, 28 doubles, 12 triples, 10 home runs, 67 RBIs, 74 walks and 112 runs at SJSU
Kyle Calzadiaz, RHP, Walnut, Calif., Mt. San Antonio College
- Spent his final two collegiate seasons with the Spartans
- Began his career at Cal Poly Pomona before transferring to Mt. San Antonio College
- Named to the 2025 Mountain West All-Tournament Team and 2026 Preseason Mountain West All-Conference
- Made 32 appearances for the Spartans, starting in 12 games
- Had three wins, three saves and 111 strikeouts across 102 innings pitched at SJSU
- Recorded an ERA of 5.03 as a Spartan
