FULLERTON, Calif. – Daniel Fregoso Bautista scored his second goal of the season to lead the San José State men’s soccer team (3-4-1, 0-0-0 MW) in a 2-1 loss to Cal State Fullerton (1-3-3, 0-0-0 Big West) on Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium. This was the Spartans’ final non-conference match of the season.
The Titans opened the scoring on a penalty kick by Fernando Valenzuela just 1:07 into the match. The Spartans responded with sustained pressure, recording 15 shots in the opening half.
Fregoso Bautista pulled SJSU level in the 19th minute, finishing a sequence set up by Cameron Cook and Fernando Duarte. The goal sent the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.
Cal State Fullerton regained the lead in the 67th minute when Valenzuela scored his second goal of the match. The Spartans were unable to find a second equalizer.
San José State outshot the Titans 17-14 and finished with a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Fregoso Bautista, Cook and Angel Fernandez each recorded a team-high three shots, while goalkeeper Ronin Axelson made three saves.
