PALO ALTO, Calif.— Sam Keightley and Samu Biros each recorded hat tricks to lead the No. 9 San José State men's water polo team (5-7, 0-0 WCC) in a 16-10 loss to No. 2 Stanford (9-1, 0-0 MPSF) on Friday afternoon.
The Spartans kept pace with the Cardinal early, trailing by just one goal after the first quarter before matching Stanford's five goals in the second to make it an 8-7 game at halftime. Stanford pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Spartans down the stretch to secure the 16-10 win.
- Keightley and Biros each finished with three goals, while Giancarlo Marquez added two and Péter Kolos Kohári and Aidan Johnson each scored one.
- Zalan Hegedus and Mitchell Keightley each dished out two assists, and Alexey Poletaev, Mateja Cetkovic and Biros each added one.
- Poletaev made seven saves in net.
UP NEXT: The Spartans return home for an exhibition against West Valley College at 9 a.m., followed by a matchup with UC Merced at 12 p.m.
