USAFA, Colo.—Six Spartans recorded at least seven kills in the match, led again by Morgan Graves with 16, as the San José State volleyball team fought hard against Air Force on Saturday but fell 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 15-25, 25-19, 15-13) in a Mountain West Match at Cadet East Gym.

  • Graves recorded a team-best 16 kills in the match. She added six digs and an assist.
  • Mariana Buchanan had a season-high 12 kills and hit .346 from the right side (12-3-26) in five sets played.
  • Ava Hewitt-Smith hit .500 for the match with a season-best 11 kills on 18 attempts and only two hitting errors.
  • Naima Foster was one kill short of a double-double on Saturday with nine kills and a season-high 13 digs.
  • Tatiana Robinson had nine kills from the right side and added three digs and five assists.
  • Learden Lee added seven kills for the Spartans.
  • Lee led the Spartan blocking attack with a season-high eight blocks. She recorded a career-best five solo blocks to go with three block assists.
  • Hewitt-Smith added four blocks, three solo and one assist, while Graves added three blocks, one solo and two assists.
  • Fatimah Hall recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 24 assists and 10 digs.
  • Orian Drore led the Spartan defense with 17 digs, while Zuzana Kosíková added nine digs and three aces.
  • Hanna Darvas added 23 assists, six digs and two aces.
  • The Spartans won the first set, 25-23, overcoming a 23-21 deficit to score the final three points of the set, winning on back-to-back kills by Buchanan and Graves.
  • SJSU got down 7-2 early in set three but used a 7-1 run to take a 9-8 lead on a Foster killer to take the lead for good and win 25-15 on a Buchanan kill.
  • The Spartans are now 5-8 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

UP NEXT – The Spartans open the home portion of the MW schedule with two matches against Wyoming on Thursday, October 1 at 6 p.m., and on Saturday, October 3, at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at Spartan Gym, inside the YUH Complex, on the corner of 4th and San Carlos Streets. Admission is free to both matches, and parking is available in the West Garage off of Fourth Street.
