SAN JOSE, Calif. – Neo Ruiz scored the game tying goal to lead the San José State men’s soccer team (3-4-2, 0-0-1 MW) in a 1-1 tie against UC Davis (0-5-4, 0-0-1 MW) on Saturday night at the Spartan Soccer Complex in the Mountain West conference play opener.
Trailing 1-0 late in the match, the Spartans found the equalizer in the 80th minute when Ruiz scored with his right foot, hitting the ball into the left corner of the net. Angel Gutierrez provided the assist with his head on the game-tying goal.
UC Davis took an early lead in the eighth minute off a botched SJSU clearance. San José State responded with sustained pressure throughout the match, finishing with a 13-8 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
- This match was the first ever Mountain West conference game for the Spartans
- This is the third season in a row the Spartans earned a result against UC Davis despite conceding first
- Ruiz’s goal was his second of the season and third of his career
- Gutierrez’s assist was the first of his career
- Goalkeeper Ronin Axelson made two saves in the game, putting his season total up to 38
