SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San José State men's soccer team (1-2-0, 0-0-0 MW) will play No. 1 Stanford (4-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC) on Friday, September 4, at 7 p.m. and Sacramento State (1-3-0, 0-0-0 Big West) on Sunday, September 6, at 7 p.m. at the Spartan Soccer Complex. Both games will be shown live on MW+.

SJSU HISTORY VS. No. 1
The Spartans have defeated the No. 1 ranked team in the country once, on Sept. 8, 1978 in a 2-1 victory over defending national champion Hartwick College, played in Oneota, New York. The Spartans are 1-4-1 all-time against teams ranked No. 1. Full list:

OTHER NOTES
- Jesus Sanchez was named Interim Head Coach of the Spartans on August 21. Sanchez enters his ninth season with the Spartans, starting as an assistant coach and later named Associate Head Coach in 2024
- Head Coach Simon Tobin officially retired from the Spartans on August 31. Tobin coached for 39 seasons split up between CSU Bakersfield and SJSU. Tobin finishes with a career record of 394-281-89
- This season marks the inaugural season of Mountain West men's soccer. SJSU joins UC Davis, UNLV, Utah Tech, Grand Canyon and Air Force in the conference. SJSU previously was a member of the WAC
- The Spartans' 12 wins last season was the most in a season for SJSU since 2003
- The Spartans made it to the championship game of the WAC Tournament in three out of the last four seasons
- The Spartans last win over a ranked opponent came on Oct. 16, 2021 in a 2-1 victory over No. 10 Grand Canyon at the Spartan Soccer Complex
- If victorious, this would be the Spartans' highest ranked win since Oct. 16, 2005 in a 3-2 victory over No. 2 New Mexico
- The Spartans defeated Saint Mary's 4-2 at the Spartan Soccer Complex in their last time out
- Amir Anwary was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week after tallying two goals and two assists in the Spartans' win over Saint Mary's
- The Spartans had three players named to the Mountain West Watch List: Midfielder Angel Fernandez, Defender Ruben Flores-Thomas and Goalkeeper Ronin Axelson
- The Spartans were picked as co-favorites in the Mountain West preseason poll, tied with Grand Canyon and earning two first place votes
- Last season, Fernando Duarte was named to the All-WAC freshman team and Dane Pendleton was named to the WAC All-Tournament Team
- Cameron Cook was named to the 2024 WAC All-Freshman team. He was also rated No. 64 on TopDrawerSoccer's Top 100 Freshman list at the end of that season.
- The Spartans return 17 players from 2025. The Spartans had ten freshmen to the squad and two JUCO transfers to round out the squad
- Jamie Reid returns to the Spartans as an Associate Head Coach. Reid was an assistant with the Spartans in 2024 and 2025 before spending a brief stint at San Diego State
- The Spartan add two new assistants to the squad, David Sweeney and Jota Yamaguchi. Sweeney was the Spartans' goalie from 2019-23 and is the current SJSU all-time lead in saves (281) and shutouts (20)
SCOUTING No. 1 STANFORD
No. 1 Stanford is 4-0-0 on the season with two of those wins coming over ranked opponents, including No. 2 San Diego. The Cardinal are coming off a 2-1 win over UC Davis at home. Their match at SJSU will be their first road match of the season.
Stanford is led by freshman forward Logan Tsopanoglou who has three goals on the season. Their starting goal, Rowan Schnebly has eight saves in four appearances while allowing three goals.
The Spartans are 27-37-9 all time against Stanford and have not defeated the Cardinal since 2006 when they won 2-1 on the road. Last season, the Spartans drew No. 3 Stanford 2-2 at the Spartan Soccer Complex. Stanford scored the game-tying goal with 37 seconds remaining off a corner kick.
SCOUTING SACRAMENTO STATE
Sacramento State is 1-3-0 on the season with their lone coming in a 3-1 victory against UC Davis at home in their season opener. The Hornets are coming off a 1-0 loss to Utah Tech on the road.
Sacramento State is led by senior forward Zac Giles who has one goal and two assists on the season. Starting goalie Lucas Bost has allowed five goals and made 17 saves across four games.
The Spartans are 35-22-4 all-time against Sac State and have won three in a row against the Hornets. Last season, the Spartans defeated Sac State 2-0 on the road with Daniel Fregoso Bautista and Cameron Cook each scoring in the game.
