Spartans Victorious in 2026 Home Opener

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Freshman Eva Vostracka came off the bench in the fifth set to serve the final seven points of the set and help the San José State volleyball team open the home schedule with a 3-2 win over Portland Thursday afternoon at the SJSU Invite inside Spartan Gym.

  • The Spartans trailed 9-8 in the fifth set before Vostracka entered the match and served seven consecutive points for the 15-9 set win and 3-2 match win.
  • Devon DeNecochea recorded two of the team’s final three kills of the match, including the winner. She finished the match with 11 kills, hitting .423 with no errors.
  • Lolohea Fonua led the Spartans with 13 kills and hit .379 for the match.
  • Learden Lee had a team-high six blocks, one solo and five assists, while DeNecochea added four blocks.
  • Fatimah Hall recorded 27 assists in the win.
  • Orian Drore led the Spartan defense with nine digs, and seven players had three or more digs in the match.
  • San José State fell in the first set, 25-11, but rallied to win set two 25-23. The two teams then traded 25-19 sets, with Portland winning the third and SJSU the fourth to set up the fifth set.
