DAVIS, Calif.— Samu Biros recorded nine goals on the day to lead the No. 10 San José State men's water polo team (1-1, 0-0 WCC) in a 14-8 win against No. 18 Harvard (2-4, 0-0, NWPC) and a 14-10 loss against No. 4 Cal (4-0, 0-0, MPSF) at the Aggie Roundup on Saturday.
With Biros' nine goals, that now brings him to 102 career goals.
Against No. 18 Harvard:
Harvard opened the scoring, but San José State answered with three straight goals to seize the lead in the first quarter. Harvard tied the score early in the second quarter before the Spartans pulled away again, with goals from Aron Sárfalvi, Biros and Austin Hexter to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
The Spartans' defense took over from there. They held the Crimson to just three goals over the final two quarters while adding seven of their own to close out the 14-8 win.
- Biros led all scorers with four goals while Sam Keightley and Sárfalvi each added three.
- Along with a goal, Hexter contributed four steals.
- In the net, Alexey Poletaev recorded nine saves.
Against No. 4 Cal
Cal came out strong, building a 5-2 lead in the first quarter and stretching it to 8-4 by halftime. The Spartans pushed back in the third quarter, outscoring the Bears 5-4, but Cal answered down the stretch with a 2-1 edge in the fourth to close out the win, 14-10.
- Biros paced the Spartans' offense with five goals, while Aron Sarfalvi also found the back of the net.
The Spartans also faced American River College in an exhibition game where they won 12-6.
UP NEXT: The Spartans will return to action next week where they will participate in the Princeton Invitation in Princeton, N.J., from Sept. 11-12. On Friday, Sept. 11, they will face Wagner at 9:30 a.m. and LIU at 3:30 p.m. PST.
