Spartans Drop Match to Hawai'i In Renewed Rivalry

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Paige Fry recorded five saves to lead the San José State women's soccer team (2-9-2, 1-5-0 MW) in the 2-0 match against Hawai'i (7-4-1, 4-1-0 MW).

Mercedes Cioffi put her body on the line, blocking a shot in the seventh minute and the ball being ricocheted around; Fry made a stop on her own to keep the match even.

Elizabeth Ortega kept the selfless acts going as she blocked a shot of her own to assist Fry, who was recovering after making a diving punch.

The match opened with a scoreless first half and the Spartans recording five shots while testing the keeper twice. Paige Pineda-Aliamus sent a rocket from the left side outside the box that forced the keeper to dive to her right and wrangle the shot in the 13th minute.

Both goals for the Rainbow Wahine came in the second half. SJSU was unable to clear a set piece that was set into the box and Hawai'i capitalized and sent one into the net in the 78th minute.

Within the next ten minutes, Hawai'i drew a corner and were able to convert it for a goal for the 2-0 brace to secure the match.
