SAN JOSE, Calif.—Devon DeNecochea and Ava Hewitt-Smith combined to hit .417 as the San José State volleyball team got its first Mountain West win of the season Thursday with a 3-1 victory over Wyoming (25-23, 24-26, 25-19, 25-23) at Spartan Gym.

  • DeNecochea led the Spartans with a season-high 14 kills. She hit .323 for the match from the right side, taking 31 attempts and only recorded four errors.
  • Hewitt-Smith hit .588 with 10 kills on 17 attempts and no errors.
  • Learden Lee added six kills as she hit .357 for the four sets (6-1-14).
  • Zuzana Kosíková and Morgan Graves each recorded nine kills in the win.
  • Hewitt-Smith led the blocking attack with seven, including two solo blocks that inched her closer to the San José State career solo block list. She ended the night with 48 career solo blocks, one shy of 10th place (Arlene Ringer, 1982-83).
  • Setters Fatimah Hall and Hanna Darvas each recorded double-doubles in the match. Hall had 22 assists and 12 digs, while Darvas added 21 assists and 11 digs.
  • Orian Drore led the Spartan defense with 19 digs and added seven assists.
  • The Spartans got six kills from DeNecochea in the first set, including the set winner for the 25-23 win. Eva Vostracka recorded back-to-back aces in the set to give SJSU the 24-21.
  • After taking a 24-22 lead in set two, the Cowgirls recorded four straight points for the 26-24 win and tied the match at 1-1.
  • San José State jumped out to a 4-3 lead on a Lee kill in set three and won 25-19 on another DeNecochea kill.
  • The two teams traded the lead eight times in the fourth set, but the Spartans had to rally from down 20-16, to win 25-23.

UP NEXT – The Spartans and Cowgirls play again this Saturday, October 3. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at Spartan Gym, inside the YUH Complex on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. Admission is FREE for all. Parking is available in the West Garage on Fourth Street, for a nominal fee.
