Spartans Open Mountain West Conference Play With a Win at Hawai'i

HONOLULU - Playing against his former team, Luke Weaver completed 19 of 28 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns to lead San José State (3-2, 1-0 MW) in a 20-16 victory over Hawai‘i (1-4, 0-3 MW) on Saturday night at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.

Weaver connected with Hawai’i native Kamaehu Kopa-Kaawalauole for a 10-yard touchdown in the second quarter before finding Carson Clark for a 12-yard score later in the period.

San José State led 14-0 at halftime before Hawai‘i scored 13 consecutive points, cutting the deficit to one possession with two field goals and a 58-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Trajan Sinatra answered with a 24-yard field goal to give the Spartans a 17-13 advantage entering the fourth.

After Hawai‘i brought it back to a one-point game on a 44-yard field goal, San José State mounted a 12-play, 26-yard drive that consumed 5:31. Sinatra capped the possession with a 30-yard field goal with 1:15 remaining to put the Spartans ahead for good.

The Rainbow Warriors drove into San José State territory in the final minute, but the Spartans held on their fourth-down hail mary to secure the victory. 

Jabari Bates led San José State on the ground with 74 yards on 27 carries. Clark finished with five receptions for 74 yards, while Jerry McClure added four catches for 41 yards.

Caleb Womack and Jayden Robertson each recorded an interception while Dylan Lee led the Spartans with nine tackles. Jeremiah Tuiileila also recorded a career-high two sacks and a forced fumble.

  • The Spartans have now won the Dick Tomey Legacy Game six times in a row and have defeated Hawai’i on the road four straight times
  • The Spartans have also thrown multiple touchdown passes in nine straight games against the Rainbow Warriors
  • Weaver has thrown multiple touchdowns in four out of five games this season
  • To go along with his 74 rushing yards, Bates racked up 39 receiving yards, giving him 113 all-purpose yards on the day
  • Cooper Hoch tallied three receptions for 46 yards, including a clutch one-handed grab late in the fourth quarter on fourth down
  • Clark’s touchdown was his fourth of the season, and he now has at least one touchdown in three consecutive games
  • Clark’s 43-yard reception in the third quarter was also a career-long
  • Kopa-Kaawalauole’s touchdown was the first of his career
  • The Spartans shutout Hawai’i in the first half, marking the first time SJSU shutout an opponent in the first half since defeating Wyoming 24-14 on Oct. 19, 2024
  • Womack’s interception was his second of the season and his career
  • Robertson’s interception was his first of the season
  • Ethan Powell recorded five tackles and his first full sack of the season
  • Naseri Danielson recorded his first career tackle for a loss
  • Aizik Mahuka also recorded a tackle for a loss
  • Trent Carrizosa punted six times, three of which were for over 50 yards and had a long punt of 70 yards
