Brajovic Wins in First Day of the ITA Regional Championships

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Katarina Brajovic won in singles in the qualifying round, advancing to the main draw and leading the San José State women’s tennis team on day one of the ITA Regional Championships.

Brajovic, Camila Celis, Nitika Girish and Cristina Mateos Losada competed in the qualifying round to start the tournament.

  • Brajovic advanced in her first match when her opponent retired, then rallied for a three-set victory over UC Davis’ Penelope Wong, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
  • Celis dropped a straight-sets match to Pacific’s Rayna Sugai, 6-3, 7-5.
  • Mateos Losada was defeated by Oregon’s Juliet Santitto, 6-2, 6-1.
  • Girish pushed Santa Clara’s Anna Rahman to three sets but came up short, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6.
  • In doubles, Emma Fantousis and Soledad Fayos Capilla battled Gonzaga’s Sia Cariov and Angelina Hug in a tight match but lost, 8-7 (7-5).
  • Brajovic and Girish were topped by Washington State’s Clara Schoen and Chisato Kanemaki, 8-3.
  • Mateos Losada and Celis fell to Gonzaga’s Emily Robertson and Ella Nielsen, 8-2.

UP NEXT: Brajovic, Fantousis and Fayos Capilla will compete in singles in the main draw tomorrow on day two of the ITA Regional Championships.
