Summer School: The SJSU Athletics Department has the discretion to offer athletics aid to student-athletes who attend summer school. The amount of aid provided is subject to budgetary limitations and gender equity considerations; however, NCAA Bylaw 15.2.8.1.2 limits the amount of summer athletics aid provided to continuing student-athletes to the proportion of athletics aid he/she received during the regular academic year.
SJSU Summer Athletics Aid Policy
NCAA Scholarship Rules: Pursuant to NCAA rules, a verbal commitment is not binding on either the student-athlete or the institution. The National Letter of Intent is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an institution in which the institution agrees to provide a prospective student-athlete who is admitted to the institution and is eligible for financial aid under NCAA rules athletics aid for one academic year in exchange for the prospective student-athlete's agreement to attend the institution for one academic year. The National Letter of Intent must be accompanied by an institutional financial aid agreement. If the prospective student-athlete signs the National Letter of Intent but does not enroll at that institution for a full academic year, he or she may be subject to specific penalties, including loss of a season of eligibility and a mandatory residence requirement.
Athletics Scholarship Renewals
Scholarship Duration: Per NCAA Bylaw 15.3.3.1, an athletics scholarship may not be awarded for less than one academic year or for a period that would exceed the student-athlete's five year period of eligibility.
Renewal/Nonrenewal: The SJSU Office of Financial Aid, upon the recommendation of the Athletics Department, issues a written notice of renewal or nonrenewal to each continuing student-athlete who received an award the previous academic year by July 1 in accordance with NCAA Bylaw 15.3.5.1. Each sport program's head coach has the discretion, subject to the approval of the Director of Athletics, to recommend whether a student-athlete's athletics aid is renewed for the following academic year. Following the period of the award, athletics aid may be nonrenewed for any reason; however, when a continuing student-athlete's athletics aid is not renewed or is renewed at a reduced amount or duration for the following period, the SJSU Office of Financial Aid notifies the student-athlete in writing that he/she has the opportunity for an appeals hearing before a Subcommittee consisting of the Director of Financial Aid, and two additional non-athletics SJSU staff members. Per NCAA Bylaw 15.3.4.3, athletics aid may not be reduced or cancelled during the period of the award based on an athletics reason or due to injury, illness, or physical or mental medical condition.
Medical Expenses
Per NCAA Bylaw 16.4, an institution, conference, or the NCAA may provide medical and related expenses to a student-athlete.
The SJSU Athletics Department carries an excess accidental insurance policy that covers costs not paid by the student-athlete's primary insurance. Medical expenses will not be paid by SJSU's secondary insurance policy until any existing personal medical insurance policy is exhausted. SJSU only pays charges for injuries that are the result of supervised SJSU intercollegiate athletics practice or competition.
If a student-athlete does not have any primary insurance, the Athletics Department will ask the outside medical provider to bill SJSU Athletics directly. There should be no out-of-pocket expense for the student-athlete if the injury occurred during a supervised SJSU intercollegiate athletics practice or competition.
Athletically related injuries sustained while participating in official SJSU practices and intercollegiate athletics competition are covered for up to two (2) years from the date of injury. No bills for treatment are paid after this time period.
If a student-athlete seeks outside medical care without an appropriate referral by a member of the SJSU Sports Medicine staff or a Team Physician, they will be responsible for all related medical expenses. No liability on the part of SJSU exists or may be assumed to exist for off-campus medical or dental treatment or hospitalization of any kind without prior referral.
Athletic Release Information
Permission to Contact (NCAA Bylaws 13.1.1.3 & 13.1.1.3.1)
- Student-athletes interested in transferring to another NCAA or NAIA institution must provide that institution with permission to contact from the SJSU Compliance Office. SJSU must respond to a student-athlete's written request for permission to contact within seven business days. If SJSU fails to respond to a student-athlete's written request within this time frame, permission shall be granted by default and SJSU shall provide written permission to the student-athlete.
- Hearing Opportunity: If SJSU delays or denies a student-athlete's request for permission to contact other institutions about transferring, the student-athlete will be notified in writing by the Compliance Office of the opportunity for a hearing conducted by an institutional committee outside of the Athletics Department. The hearing must be conducted and written results of the hearing provided to the student-athlete within 15 business days of receipt of the student-athlete's written request for a hearing. The student-athlete shall be provided the opportunity to actively participate (e.g., in person, via telephone) in the hearing. If SJSU fails to conduct the hearing or provide the written results to the student-athlete within this time frame, permission to contact shall be granted by default and SJSU shall provide written permission to the student-athlete.
One-Time Transfer Exception (NCAA Bylaws 14.5.5.2.10 & 14.5.5.2.10.1)
- One time during a student-athlete's period of eligibility he/she may use the one-time transfer exception to be immediately eligible upon transfer to another four-year institution. This exception to the general rule that requires a student-athlete who transfers to another four-year institution to serve a year in residence before competing at the second institution may be used provided all of the following conditions are met:

- The student is a participant in a sport other than baseball, basketball, bowl subdivision football or men's ice hockey at the institution to which the student is transferring;
- The student has not transferred previously from one four-year institution unless, in the previous transfer, the student-athlete received an exception for a discontinued/nonsponsored sport;
- At the time of transfer to the certifying institution, the student would have been academically eligible had he/she remained at the institution from which the student transferred, except that he or she is not required to have fulfilled the necessary percentage-of-degree requirements at the previous institution; and
- If the student is transferring from an NCAA or NAIA member institution, the student's previous institution shall certify in writing that it has no objection to the student being granted an exception to the transfer-residence requirement. If an institution receives a written request for a release from a student-athlete, the institution shall grant or deny the request within seven business days. If the institution fails to respond to the student-athlete's written request within seven business days, the release shall be granted by default and the institution shall provide a written release to the student-athlete.
- Hearing Opportunity: If SJSU delays or denies a student-athlete's request for use of the one-tine transfer exception, the student-athlete will be notified in writing by the Compliance Office of the opportunity for a hearing conducted by an institutional committee outside of the DIA. The hearing must be conducted and written results of the hearing provided to the student-athlete within 15 business days of receipt of the student-athlete's written request for a hearing. The student-athlete shall be provided the opportunity to actively participate (e.g., in person, via telephone) in the hearing. If SJSU fails to conduct the hearing or provide the written results to the student-athlete within this time frame, use of the one-time transfer exception shall be granted by default and SJSU shall provide written permission to use the one-time transfer exception to the student-athlete.
