Arnold Ale was the San Jose State University football linebackers coach for the 2016 season. He was the position coach for All-Mountain West honorable mention linebacker Christian Tago.
Ale (pronounced Ah-leh) came to San Jose State after three seasons (2013-15) as the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Long Beach City College. He also was the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Los Angeles Harbor College (2010-12). While at L.A. Harbor, he participated in the NFL's minority internship coaching program during the 2012 preseason with the Cincinnati Bengals.
The 1993 UCLA graduate was a linebacker at Notre Dame and UCLA where he was a teammate of Coach Caragher. In his one season at Notre Dame, the Fighting Irish completed a perfect 12-0 season and was the 1988 national champion. A three-year starter for UCLA, he was the 1991 John Hancock Bowl Most Valuable Player in the Bruins' 6-3 win over Illinois.
Professionally, Ale was a member of the 1993 Seattle Seahawks practice squad and played for the 1994 Kansas City Chiefs and 1996 San Diego Chargers. He also played one season for the 1996 NFL Europe World Bowl champion Scottish Claymores.
He began his coaching career in 1997 and spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Carson (Calif.) High. Ale was the head coach at St. Anthony High in Long Beach, Calif., in 2001 and Bishop Montgomery High in Torrance, Calif., from 2002 through 2009. One of his players at Bishop Montgomery was Chandler Jones, the San Jose State career leader in pass receptions.
Ale also earned a master's degree in kinesiology from the University of Central Missouri in 2012.
He and his wife, Sive, are the parents of daughters, Imeleta and Normalina, and sons, Uiolevanuseaulaoleolo and Reuben.
