Andrew Sowder was San Jose State University's offensive coordinator and tight ends coach in 2017. Appointed in January 2017, he joined the Spartans' staff after one season as the offensive quality control coach working with the wide receivers at the University of Texas.
Throughout his coaching career, Sowder is connected to championship teams and top-20 nationally-ranked units in total offense. He was on the coaching staffs at Bowling Green State University that won the 2015 Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship and the 2014 MAC East Division title. As the wide receivers coach at Eastern Illinois University in 2012 and 2013, the Panthers won back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference championships. The 2011 West Texas A&M team won the NCAA Division II Kanza Bowl.
In his five seasons as a college football assistant coach, West Texas A&M was 14th in total offense among NCAA Division II programs in 2011. Eastern Illinois was seventh in 2012 and the 2013 national leader in total offense among Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) schools. Bowling Green was fourth in total offense in 2015 and Texas was 16th in the same category a year ago.
He also served as the director of player personnel and recruiting coordinator at Bowling Green for the 2014 season.
A 2011 Baylor University graduate, Sowder majored in film/digital media. He was a wide receiver and tight end for the 2007 and 2008 Bears football teams.
Sowder began his coaching career as a student assistant at Baylor in 2009 and was a member of the staff that directed the Bears to the 2010 Texas Bowl -- the school's first post-season appearance in 16 years.
The native of Lubbock, Texas was raised in Shallowater, Texas.
