Devin Chappell was a San Jose State University football graduate assistant during the 2020 season. He spent his season with the Spartan defensive coaches.
Chappell came to the Spartans in July 2020 from Oregon State University. During the 2020 spring football practice season, he was a recruiting assistant for the Beavers.
The native of Downey, Calif., played football at Western Oregon University in 2012 and 2013 before transferring to Oregon State in 2014 for the remainder of his college career. In the 2015 and 2016 seasons, Chappell, playing a safety position, started in 20 of the 23 games. As a senior in 2016, he tied the school record and ranked second among all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players for forced fumbles with six. Chappell concluded his college football career with an invitation to the 2017 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.
The 2016 Oregon State graduate majored in economics. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2017 and spent the season on the injured reserve list. Chappell was a member of the Arizona Hot Shots of the Alliance for American Football in January 2019.
After earning a teaching certificate from the state of Texas in February 2019, he began his coaching career that fall as an assistant football coach in charge of the defensive backs and an assistant basketball coach at Lehman High in Kyle, Texas.
He has one daughter, Zaiya.
