Matt Adkins finished his sixth season with the San José State University football staff in 2022 and his fourth as an assistant coach. From 2017 through 2019, he was a graduate assistant working with the offensive coaching staff and the tight ends specifically.
In 2022, his tight ends combined for seven touchdown receptions in 12 games and Dominick Mazotti was named to the Mountain West Honorable Mention team.
His 2020 tight end contingent included John Mackey Award semifinalist and current Detroit Lions tight end Derrick Deese, Jr., and Sam Olson. In 2019, he employed a trio of tight ends with diverse skill sets and each of the three had their most productive season at the major college level.
The 2018 season was different for the Spartan coach. Adkins coached first-team All-Mountain West tight end Josh Oliver, the 69th overall selection in the 2019 National Football League draft as a third-round choice of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
