Joining the staff in 2014, Shane Carew enters his second season as an assistant coach for the San José State men's soccer program in 2015.
Carew spent the 2013 season as an assistant coach at Elon University and helped guide the Phoenix to one of its most successful seasons. The side defeated two top-10 ranked teams, No. 9 Wake Forest and No. 6 Coastal Carolina, and reached the second round of the NCAA Championship. To cap the campaign, midfielder Daniel Lovitz became the program's highest drafted player ever in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft when he was tabbed the 24th overall selection by Toronto FC.
Prior to his tenure at Elon, he served as the Executive Director of Coaching for FC Carolina Alliance (FCCA) from 2008-2012. In that capacity, Carew oversaw all FCCA Soccer Programs including FCCA Tournaments, Classic, Challenge, Academy Munchkin, Pre-Academy and Goalkeeping. He holds a USSF "A" soccer coaching license and is studying for a UEFA "B" license.
Carew played collegiately at the University of Charlotte from 2000-to-2002 where he was a three-time All-Conference USA selection and earned National Team of the Week honors for the 49ers. In 2003 he was selected to the Irish National Team and represented his country in that year's World University Games in Daegu, South Korea.
Carew also played professionally in his native Ireland with Shelbourne FC (98-00) and Kilkenny City (2004) and also with the Long Island Rough Riders (2003).
In addition, Carew served as the director of soccer operations at the University of Charlotte and on the North Carolina Olympic Development Program (ODP) staff. He is also a former president of the Charlotte Area Youth Soccer League (CAYSL).
Carew graduated from Charlotte in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in English and in 2005 with a degree in communication studies.
