San Jose native Nic Ryan joined the Spartan men’s soccer staff as a volunteer assistant in 2017 and was named as an assistant coach prior to the start of the 2020-21 campaign.
Since his first season on the coaching staff, the Spartans have made the WAC tournament every year (seven consecutive seasons).
Prior to his start in coaching, Ryan played four years of collegiate soccer at UC Santa Barbara from 2009-2012. He reached the NCAA Tournament three times with the Gauchos, advancing to the tournament’s Third Round in two of those years.
As a senior in 2012, Ryan finished his collegiate playing career in style and was named the Big West Midfielder of the Year. He was then selected in the 2013 MLS Draft by the Houston Dynamo.
In addition to his responsibilities at SJSU, Ryan also serves on the coaching staff for Almaden FC on the club level. He currently resides in San José.
