Lamont Johnson joined SJSU as the new Track & Field Associate Head Coach in September of 2025. Johnson brings with him nearly two decades of coaching experience across NCAA Division I and II programs, with a proven record of developing championship-caliber student-athletes in sprints, hurdles, relays, and jumps.
Johnson most recently served as Assistant Women’s Track & Field Coach at Georgia State University, where he designed and implemented sprint and hurdle training programs while overseeing recruiting, travel and program operations. Prior to Georgia State, he was Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Oakland University, where his sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers earned 10 Horizon League titles and set multiple school records.
His leadership experience also includes serving as Head Coach of Men’s and Women’s Track & Field and Cross Country at Johnson C. Smith University, where he raised more than $200,000 in program funds, guided his teams to multiple CIAA Championships, and achieved a 100% graduation rate for his student-athletes.
Over the course of his career, Johnson has mentored:

- 67 NCAA Qualifiers
- 2 National Champions
- Over 50 school record holders
- Student-athletes who went on to win national and international titles, including an IAAF World Champion.
Johnson, a graduate of Iowa State University with a B.A. in Sociology, began his coaching career with volunteer roles at the University of Alabama, the University of New Mexico, and his alma mater. He has since developed a reputation as a skilled recruiter, technical coach, and program builder with deep knowledge of NCAA competition.
