Gabe Wiest joined the Spartans on December 1st, 2022 after three seasons at Northeastern Junior College as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach. With the Plainswomen, Wiest had a multitude of responsibilities including creating scouting reports, conducting individual workouts and serving as the team's academic advisor. He was also the team's recruiting coordinator. Two of the players coached by Wiest took the next step and transitioned to playing for NCAA Division-1 schools. Every player that Wiest coached who had intentions of continuing to play basketball after junior college was successful.
Before Northeastern Junior College, Wiest served two years as the varsity girl's assistant basketball coach at Fresno High School in Fresno California. During the 2017-2019 season the program had its best season in history, finishing with a 26-3 record, 10-0 league record, it’s first state playoff win is program history, as well as an appearance in quarter finals of the state playoffs. In his second season the team finished with a 22-10 record, an appearance in the section title game, and hosted the programs first state playoff game. During his two years 5 athletes went on to play college basketball.
Wiest graduated high school in 2010 from Fresno Adventist Academy. He attended Fresno State where he received a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology in 2014. After his bachelor’s he received a master’s degree in sport psychology from Fresno State in 2017. His master’s project was on creating a physical literacy program for elementary and middle school students.
