Abe Munayer is in his first year as the Head of Athletic Performance, Olympic Sports at San Jose State. He joined the Spartans in April 2021 after spending four years as the Director of Strength and Conditioning at the City College of San Francisco, where he was tasked with implementing and training all 15 varsity sports for the athletics department.
During his time with CCSF, Munayer also directed all strength and conditioning weight room set up, equipment, and pre and post-training nutrition. He was tasked with implementing and designing all of the football training camp and in-season practice schedule, and was in charge of moderating the volume and intensity for all practices leading up to game day competition. In addition to serving as the sports medicine liaison for athletic training and the medical doctor staff, Munayer was also the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Rams' football, men's and women's basketball, track and field and volleyball programs, as well as being in charge of implementing a program design for all Olympic sports.
In 2021, Munayer completed a strength and conditioning fellowship with the Green Bay Packers during the team's organized team activities (OTA's). In the course of the fellowship, he helped facilitate and train the athletes with their off-season strength and conditioning program, and was in charge of leading the pre-lift priming stations to help the athletes prepare for the day's training program prior to the start of each lift. He also assisted in the implementation and designation of conditioning and shuttle times for high-intensity running sessions, and helped organize and prepare the facilities for each training session.
Prior to his time at CCSF, Munayer spent two seasons at Stanford University as the Cardinal's sports performance coach. In the role, he was responsible with assisting the sports performance staff in the day-to-day duties surrounding the football program. Before his time at Stanford, Munayer spent three seasons on staff at the University of California, Berkeley. During his time with the Golden Bears, he served as the head strength and conditioning coach for the men's rowing, women's gymnastics and men's gymnastics programs. In 2016, he assisted men's rowing to the National Championship, as well as the women's gymnastics team to an appearance at the NCAA Championships for the second time in program history, earning second place at the NCAA Alabama Regional. Munayer coached three Olympic qualifiers for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
Prior to his stop at Cal, Munayer worked with the Cleveland Browns during their 2014 training camp, earning the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship for his efforts while assisting the strength and conditioning staff.
Among his many qualifications, he is both a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA) and Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (CSCCa).
In 2015, Munayer published a journal article as a co-author from research data to the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research: “Barbell Deadlift Training Increases the Rate of Torque Development and Vertical Jump Performance in Novices.”
Munayer interned at Stanford in 2014, when he assisted the football and wrestling programs. He also interned at Texas Tech as a graduate teaching and research assistant and strength and conditioning intern. He assisted the Red Raiders football program to the 2013 Holiday Bowl Championship.
Munayer previously worked as a strength and conditioning coach and a personal trainer at Old School Strength in Petaluma, California.
