Brandon Lamphier-Shaffer joined the Spartan Athletic Performance Staff in November of 2021 and currently serves as an Assistant Athletic Performance Coach working with the Spartan baseball, softball, and indoor & beach volleyball teams.
Shaffer comes to San Jose State from the Minnesota Twins, where he served as the Complex Strength and Conditioning Coach in Fort Myers, FL. During his time with the Minnesota Twins, Shaffer worked at the spring training complex year-round, in charge of all training aspects for the Twins GCL Rookie Ball team. Additionally, Shaffer took the lead on the preliminary evaluation and development of the 2022 Draft Class, including first round picks Chase Petty and Noah Miller. Shaffer was a member of the Energy Systems Development and Strength and Power teams in the Twins organization, tasked with creating the entire in-season and off-season conditioning protocols, as well as auditing the Major League roster’s strength training programs.
Prior to his arrival to the Twins, Shaffer spent June 2019 to December 2020 as a full-time Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Yale University in New Haven, CT, where he was the lead sports performance coach for Men’s Basketball (2020 Ivy League Champions), Volleyball (2019 Ivy League Champions), Men and Women’s Lacrosse, and Men and Women’s Rugby. During his tenure at Yale, Men’s Lacrosse produced more professional lacrosse draft picks than any other school in the country. He also assisted with strength and conditioning for Football and served as the internship coordinator for the sports performance internship.
Shaffer spent time as a Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Northwestern State University prior to his time at Yale University, serving as the lead strength coach for softball, women’s soccer, women’s basketball and cross-country while simultaneously pursuing his master’s degree and teaching undergraduate strength and conditioning courses. Prior to NSU, Shaffer began his strength and conditioning career as a Sports Performance Intern at Yale University in 2018, where he assisted with all 30+ teams on campus.
Shaffer received his Master’s of Science in Sports Administration with a concentration in Athletic Administration in August 2021 from Southern Connecticut State University. He was a collegiate baseball player at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, IN, where he received his Bachelor’s of Science in Sport Management in 2017.
Shaffer is certified as a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is also Basic Life Support First Aid/CPR Certified through the American Heart Association. He also appeared as a guest on the “Hawkin Podcast” from Hawkin Dynamics in September of 2021.
