Cameron Vaca joined the San José State University track & field coaching staff as a volunteer assistant in September 2018. On the track, he will be working with the sprint and hurdle groups.
Vaca comes to the Spartans after two seasons as the girls’ track and field head coach and lead cross country assistant at San Jose’s Archbishop Mitty High School. In cross country, the boys’ teams qualified for the 2016 and 2017 California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.) state championships. His athletes earned five All-West Catholic Athletic League honors – one first team and four second team selections. In track and field, the Monarchs tied for sixth place at the 2017 Central Coast Section Championships.
The 2016 University of California, Irvine (UCI) graduate majored in sociology and education sciences. He was a hurdler and sprinter on the 2013 through 2016 Anteater track and field teams. Vaca specialized in the 400 intermediate hurdles and still ranks tied for #6 on the UCI all-time list.
He was a 2015 and 2016 NCAA West Preliminary Meet participant and a three-time top-five finisher at the Big West Championships in his specialty. Vaca was third in 2014, second in 2015 and fifth in 2016 in the 400 hurdles. He also competed in the 110 high hurdles and the 200 and 400 meter dashes.
A model student-athlete and team captain as a senior, Vaca was a 2015 Big West Scholar-Athlete and was named to the 2016 Big West All-Academic team. He also was a two-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTCCCA) All-Academic award winner.
The San Jose native is a second generation Spartan. His father, Julio, is a San Jose State alum and his younger brother, Kyle, is a San Jose State University student. Cameron resides in Morgan Hill, Calif.
