Dr. Travis D. Boyce, Professor and Department Chair of African American Studies, serves as SJSU’s NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) and the Mountain West Conference’s representative on the NCAA 1A FAR Board of Directors.
Currently the president of the South Carolina Historical Association, Dr. Boyce’s area of research focuses on the history of African American higher education, the Civil Rights Movement, and 20th century African American History. He is the author of Steady and Measured: Benner C. Turner, A Black College President in the Jim Crow South (University of South Carolina Press, 2023) and the co-editor of Historicizing Fear: Ignorance, Vilification, and Othering (University Press of Colorado, 2020).
Dr. Boyce holds a BA in history from Claflin University (Orangeburg, SC) and an MA (history) & a PhD (cultural studies) from Ohio University (Athens, OH).
