Kortnie Maxoutopoulis Barrett joined the Spartan program as an assistant coach in January of 2021 and was named associate head coach in August of 2023.
Barrett was instrumental in the Spartans’ success in 2021-22, as the team won the 2022 Mountain West championship and finished the season ranked No. 3 on Golfstat. The Spartans were the only school outside of the Power 5 to advance to the NCAA Championships and then finished seventh in stroke play and advanced to match play for the first time in school history. Barrett coached two All-Americans in Natasha Andrea Oon and Kajsa Arwefjäll. As a team, the Spartans won five tournaments in the spring including the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional, the first regional win for the program in school history. SJSU broke the school record for most under par & par rounds recorded in a season at 64.
Barrett had a whirlwind beginning to her first five months as a Spartan in 2021. The team finished in the top-four in the first three tournaments played. She helped coach Kajsa Arewfjäll to the 2021 NCAA Championships where she tied for 36th after a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Stanford Regional. Academically, the team posted one of the highest semester grade point averages in school history.
Prior to San José State, Barrett spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Mississippi State where she helped the 2019 team get back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four seasons. She was responsible for all team travel and assisted in recruiting top talent to the school. The school’s Golfstat ranking improved from 68 when she started to 22 in the nation this past school year.
Before Starkville, Barrett spent one season on the staff at Long Beach State. She helped coach the team to the Big West Conference Championship, UC Irvine Invitational title and the program’s first NCAA Regional bid in almost 10 years. The program jumped 41 spots in the Golfstat ranks during the one season she coached the 49ers.
Barrett received her master’s degree in public & non-profit administration from Georgia Southern University in 2017 where she spent two years as the graduate assistant coach for their inaugural women’s golf program.
Playing as the former Kortnie Maxoutopoulis, she competed for three seasons at TCU after playing at Rutgers her freshman year. While at Rutgers, she was a 2011-12 BIG EAST All-Academic honoree and had seven top-10 finishes including three wins at the Bucknell Invitational, Rutgers Invitational and Lehigh Invitational
Barrett graduated from TCU with a bachelor of science degree in political science with a psychology of leadership emphasis. During her college career, she participated in the 2016 NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar and was a SAAC team representative. She competed in 24 events and earned three top-10 finishes and four top-25 finishes. Her best finish was third place at the 2015 Big XII Championship.
Growing up in the Bay Area, Maxoutopoulis Barrett graduated from Foothill High School in 2011 and called Castlewood Country Club her golf home. She ranked 115th nationally in junior golf for the class of 2011 and placed third with partner Tom Kite at the 2010 First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.
Barrett and her husband, Chelso, were married in 2019, and welcomed a daughter, Blair Darling, this past October. They also have a yellow Labrador retriever named Tillie.
