Matt Layten joined the San Jose State cross country and track & field programs as a volunteer assistant coach in January 2014. He will work with the middle distance and distance runners.
Layten joined the Spartans' coaching staff after serving as cross country head coach at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, Calif., and as an assistant track coach at South San Francisco High School in 2013.
The 2012 graduate of Cal Poly majored in political science. He co-founded the Cal Poly Distance Club program in 2010 and served as one of the coaches until 2012.
Layten is pursuing a master's degree in kinesiology at San Jose State.
