Returning to his alma mater, Richard Stern is in his ninth year as the assistant athletics media relations director at San José State University. Stern is responsible for the publicity of the football, men's and women's cross country, women's basketball and softball teams.
Stern spent two years working in the San José State sports information department while finishing coursework towards his Bachelor of Science degree in journalism in 2009. He was the primary contact for women's soccer and softball while assisting with cross country, women's basketball and tennis.
From 2009 to mid-2010, Stern was the assistant sports information director at Humboldt State. He worked with men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball, women's rowing and softball while at the school.
Stern started in the sports information field as a student volunteer at Northern Arizona before entering the private sector as a non-profit fundraiser for almost 20 years. He returned to college, finishing his degree at San José State and later a master's degree in sports management.
Stern is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and is a District Coordinator for the Google Cloud Academic All-America program in the sport of volleyball and the at-large category.
He received a Master of Arts Degree in sports management from San José State's kinesiology department in 2016. In his spare time, he enjoys big game hunting, cliff diving and motorcycle ice racing.
