Ryan Merz was promoted to assistant athletics director of compliance in July, 2018 after joining the department in 2017 as a director of compliance.
He came to San Jose State after holding positions of increasing responsibility in athletics compliance at San Diego State University, the University of California, UC San Diego, UC Irvine and the University of San Francisco.
Merz earned bachelor’s degrees from the University of Washington in 1998 majoring in political science and Central Washington University in 2000 majoring in law and justice. He has master’s degrees in criminal justice administration from Boise State University and a M.B.A. with an emphasis in sports business administration from San Diego State University.
He has participated in the NCAA’s Compliance Forum and is a member of the National Collegiate Directors of America (NACDA).
