Davis, Calif. -- San Jose State pitching gave up 23 hits and plunked six batters in a 22-4 loss to UC Davis in a non-conference game on February 20.
The 22 runs are the most allowed by San Jose State (2-2) since a 24-8 loss at UNLV on March 22, 1996.
A sacrifice fly by Jacob Valdez and some heads-up base running by Andre Mercurio put the Spartans up 2-0 in the top of the first inning. But the Aggies answered big with three runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the second making it 5-2 against Spartan starter Daniel Chavez.
Chavez gave up six hits and five earned runs in 3.0 innings of work.
John Williams had two triples in the game for UC Davis (4-1) and was one of five Aggies to tally a hit, run and an RBI in the game. Williams finished 4-for-7 with four runs and four RBI.
"We just need to play better, and play hard," said head coach Dave Nakama. "I can take this game if we play well, but today we did not."
San Jose State cut the deficit to 5-3 in the third inning when senior outfielder Nick Schulz bounced one up against the wall in center field for an RBI-double that scored Michael Gerlach. The gap quickly widened as UC Davis crossed home plate eight times throughout the fourth and fifth innings.
The Spartan bullpen committee of Drew Bradshaw, James Glawe, Ross Slaney and John Oberholtzer gave up 16 earned runs in 5.0 innings. UC Davis put up a crooked number in all five of its scoring innings, including a nine-run seventh.
"The pitchers have got to throw more first-pitch strikes," Nakama said.
The six hit-batsmen for UC Davis tied the most in school history for a singe game. Six Aggies were hit by a pitch in a 1991 game against San Jose State.
Robert Parucha was UC Davis' winning pitcher, throwing 2.1 innings in a relief role, with an earned run and four strikeouts. The loss goes to Chavez who is now 0-1 with one save.
Mercurio, Schulz and Jon Nelson all had a multi-hit game for San Jose State. Schulz has had multiple hits in all four games so far in 2013.
The Spartans hit the field again on February 22 in Tucson, Ariz., to start a three-game set against defending national champion and #10-ranked Arizona.
