Santa Cruz, Calif. ----- The San Jose State men's golf team improved its team score by 10 stokes from the second to third round and finished the 67th Transamerica/WFG Western Intercollegiate in seventh place with three Spartans cracking the top-20. The Spartans three round total was 1101 (+51) in the six-score-five tournament format.
"We are so happy with Transamerica's involvement in the Western," said head coach John Kennaday. "There is a real feel that an outstanding tournament has been ugraded. The format of pairing teammates is unique and is really well liked by everyone who plays."
Justin Estrada closed with a two-under 68 to finish in a tie for ninth. Starting on the 7th hole, he went out in even par with a pair of birdies and two bogeys. He came home in two-under, including birdies at his 12th and 18th holes. His three round total was 211 one-over.
Daniel Semmler was the team's steadiest golfer for the tournament. He opened with rounds of 70 and 73 and shot an even-par 70 on Sunday for a 213 total (+3) and a tie for 14th place. Also teeing off on the seventh, he had two bogeys and a birdie in his first four holes. Semmler picked up birdies on the 13th and 15th, his seventh and ninth holes, to make the turn at one under. Eight pars and a bogey on his way in and he signed for an even par 70.
Cody Blick had the biggest turnaround from round two to three. He was 11 shots better on Sunday, carding San Jose State's second round under-par with a 69. Blick opened with four birdies in his first eight holes and made the turn at four-under. The opening to his back nine saw four bogeys in as many holes, but he steadied himself and finished with a pair of birdies sandwiched around a bogey for a 69 and a three round total of 216 (+6).
Connor Covington finished with an 82 and Landon Polterock had an 81. Their three round totals were 227, plus-17 for Covington in a tie for 64th and 234, plus-24 and in a tie for 81st for Polterock. Taylor Bromley was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
The University of California posted the best 18-hole team score of the tournament with a 10-under par 340 on Sunday and overcame a nine-stroke deficit to capture tournament with a three-round total of 1051 (+1), 13 strokes ahead of second place UCLA.
The Bruins' Pedro Figueiredo was the individual medalist. He closed with a two-under 68 and a three-round total of 204 (-6). He was two-strokes better than California's Max Homa and Michael Kim.
